Double posting

I already posted this on our other website, but thought I'd paste it here, just in case some of you only check this one.

Tis the season ... to get sick! It seems like every year at this time, we come down with the most horrid sicknesses. I hear its because the flu/cold viruses thrive in the cold weather. That explains it. I just thought our bodies were rejecting Christmas. :)

Ethan and Rachel have have colds, going on 3 weeks now. It didn't seem like anything other than the common cold, up until about 5 days ago. Sounded like everything moved to their chests and up in their sinuses. So we journeyed over to Kaiser today (for Ethan) because I was convinced he must have strep throat. The kids were both excited to see Dr. Barlo (I know, so odd, but they were) and wanted to show and tell him all the new things they could do.

The diagnoses? Ethan has 2 ear infections (amazing since he hasn't complained of ear pain at all!) strep throat AND sports induced asthma. After he turns 3 they want me to bring him back in so they can test him and see if he just has overall asthma, but for now, they'll calling it sports induced, which Jason and I already suspected, so no shock there.

Rachel's appointment isn't until Thursday, but Dr. Barlo (not her regular Dr.) went ahead and checked her for me. He said her left ear looks like its getting an infection. He was cleaning the wax out of it and it started bleeding, which he said was fine, but means its going to be very tender and cause a lot of pain. I'm in the process of trying to get her in to be seen tomorrow and not waiting 2 more days. We have a love-hate relationship with Kaiser. :)

We're happy to be home and the kids are finally down for naps. Ethan had his 1st dose of the antibiotics and his 1st round of the Arbuteral and that went better than I had thought it would. He only has to have the inhaler administered before he goes out running around outside (sports or climbing, running, etc...) or when he has a severe cold like this.

Anyway... there's our "news". Looks like we'll be getting this out of our systems just in time for Christmas. :)

Sorry to hear the kids are so sick--that's NO fun! We have the Kaiser love/hate relationship too. But then again, I stay away from doctors as much as possible, so that helps with the Kaiser thing. :-) We've just learned so much about other ways of healing ourselves that, thankfully, we don't need to see the doctor much. Strep bites though, I've had my fair share of that, as well as ear infections. Poor kids.:-( I do hope they feel better soon, and that your Christmas is sick-free! Oh, and BTW--it's not so much that cold & flu viruses thrive in cold weather, it's that people are more cramped inside with no fresh air. In warmer weather, we open windows and doors and spend more time outside so there is less passing of sickness.

Poor kids! That's no fun at all!

Gina - that's a really interesting point about being cramped inside with no fresh air. Here in San Francisco (where we're currently freezing our buns off at 48 degrees) I've been trying to get my daughter outside every day to play at the park - or at least tour around in the stroller for a bit. But that gets me worried that she's going to be too cold...Can't win.

Stef, I hope your kiddies feel better soon!

thanks girls. The kids are looking a tiny bit better today, but I woke up throwing up. :(
I've been having some pain in my abdomen area for the past two days and then throwing up today makes me nervous. I'm going in to be seen in a few days. Especially since I have issues with cysts.
For curious readers out there - I'm not pregnant. :)

Gina, you are right about the staying in doors thing. I think our problem is we go out too much and are around so many different people and environments.

I'm sorry you are sick Stef!!

You know what I think another problem is, with these colds that fly around? People who take their kids out into stores when they are obviously ill. Like the little kid I saw in the grocery store the other day who was sneezing, coughing and had green snot running down his face!! And there he sits, in the shopping cart that the next unsuspecting person will come along and put their hands all over. Ew!

I totally agree, Jill. If your kids are obviously sick, keep them home.
I mean, I don't expect moms to stay like hermits in their homes all winter long, when their kids just have runny noses. Lets face it, if we all did that, we'd never be out in public until the spring!
But yeah... when they're obviously ill and need to be at home in bed... keep them there. :)
