from my head, through my fingers, to your screen.
Beware! its another rambling post from me. No real direction, just me talking.
This past week has been lovely. And nothing of real significance - I think we're still pinching ourselves that every single person in our home is 100% healthy. Its a grand feeling after 2 months of battling off a yucky winter virus. I'm still voting to have Christmas in August this year. We're never sick in August.
The kids and I have started a new Saturday tradition of going to our favorite cupcake/coffee house. Its called Common Ground Cupcakes and we love it. Someday we'll take Daddy with us, but for now, we go when he's at home working.
I like that there's toys and books for the kids, while they eat their treats and then I usually get a mocha and a cupcake and read a book I brought from home.
Last Sunday we heard an excellent sermon from Luke 15 {parable of the lost sheep & coin} and had so much fun seeing friends at church! Ever since our Community Group split into 3 groups, we've missed our old group so much. I had a hard time with the change-up, because our old group felt more like family to me and since we don't have our families here, I think I got very attached :)
But its been really nice getting to know a bunch of new people and starting new friendships.
Sunday night I went to my friend Laura's house for an Oscar party {Mom's Night Out} with my MOMS club. Such a fun night! We play Oscar Bingo {I won this year!} and then Oscar Trivia, which I never win, since I'm not so good with what goes on in Hollywood each year. Everyone brings yummy appetizers/desserts and its just a fun time to hang with women friends and watch the Oscars. Some of the Dads came to our house with their kids and Jason BBQ'd for them and let the kids play here while the Moms were out. So everyone had a great night :)
School has gone really well this week. I feel like I'm making great progress with Ethan everyday. I'm learning that we don't have to be on a strict schedule {there's really no need since I'm only schooling him full time} but it helps to just keep the day flowing. Right now we're working on getting our morning routine a bit more organized. You know, actually getting dressed before Noon ;-)
I'm a bit lazy with showers, dressing and doing hair on the days when we have no where to go.
Jason started his new job on Tuesday! Did I mention on here that he passed the bar for a Development position at Amazon?! He's now on a brand new development team there and really excited about starting this new adventure in his career. I'm so proud of him - he studied like crazy for the interview. I remain thankful for a husband who sets goals for himself and for our family, reaches for them and does whatever he can to achieve them. We're most thankful to God, for giving him the ability to pass and for blessing us with this new opportunity.
He's been commuting to work with his friend Jason {gets confusing, eh?} and so its allowed the kids and me to have the van all the time. It opened up a whole new world to us! Its nice not having to plan each day around having the car or not. I love when little things {or big, depending on how you view it} become huge things when we've had them taken away for a bit.
Our good friend Nate turned 36 this past week {how did that happen?!} and he had a super fun party last night. We got a sitter to watch the kids and went to sing karaoke and jam it up with our friends.
After 15 years of waiting for Jason to actually DO karaoke, he finally did last night! And not one song, he did TWO songs! Totally shocked me and completely rocked the house.
We started renting The Adventures in Odyssey for the kids off Netflix! Remember those? I loved them when I was little. I remember some friends of ours used to listen to one each night before bed {remember Nicola?!} and I always loved spending the night at their house and getting to listen to an adventure.
We've been listening to them in the car and Ethan especially loves it. I knew they'd get a kick out of seeing an actual DVD of them :)
Oh! Speaking of movies... did any of you see The King's Speech? Was it not the best movie?! At least the best I've seen in a very long time. I highly recommend it, if you haven't seen it. My friend Katie and I went and saw it together and loved it. We both agreed it was an all around pleasant, really well done movie. I'm so glad it won some awards, but I was mostly glad to see Colin Firth take the Best Actor award. He so deserved it.
If you did see The King's Speech and you happen to be a fan of Pride and Prejudice {the A&E version} did you notice Lizzy Bennett in the movie?! Took me more than an hour into the movie to realize it was her, but it definitely was!
I also really liked Inception, so I was happy to see it win some awards as well. I thought The Social Network was a well done movie, but for some reason, did not want to see it take away all the awards, so I was glad it mostly just won for musical score and maybe a couple other minor things. A movie about a social network, based on {and created by} a guy who had no concept of what real friendship even is?!
It was an interesting watch, but not an award winner, IMO.

Nate is 36!! Ha!
Then he shocked us all by song #2 - he sang White & Nerdy by Weird Al SO funny! especially since he knows it by heart and he totally rocked it.
Yes, Nate is 36! Did that make YOU feel old? It sure made me realize we're all getting up there in age :)
Thanks for the idea of Odyssey on Netflix. My kids love Odyssey and listen to it online all the time, but didn't even think to look for it on Netflix. I didn't grow up in a Christian family, so had no idea about Odyssey until a babysitter shared it with our kids :). My kids LOVE it and look forward to the new free episode everyday after they finish their schoolwork! Thanks, too, for the movie rec. I don't ever know what movies are out there, so it's good to get some reputable movie recs for when the time comes to add some to our netflix queue :).
I LOVED The King's Speech! And was so glad it got the Oscars. We have not seen Inception yet...I read a couple reviews and had some reservations. Did you feel that it was depressing? I guess hearing that there is suicide in it made me wary. But I do think we will watch it someday.
Its one of the most interesting "thinking" movies I've ever seen - highly recommended.
Brooke, where do you guys listen to Odyssey online? we've been having to buy the CD's, but I'd much rather listen for free :)
Here is the link to Odyssey -- http://www.whitsend.org/radio/
Here are a bunch of others my kids like, too (from my cousin's-in-law blog) -- I added more if you read my comment below her post, too.
